Top 6 Best Garrett Metal Detectors

To make sure that we provide you with the best possible information on what can be found on the market, we are regularly updating this guide. This will ensure that the information we provide will be accurate and will feature the latest metal detectors on the market. This guide was last updated in January 2018.

Garrett Infinium

The Garrett Infinium is an expensive metal detector. This also means that it’s good, really good. This metal detector is great for underwater expeditions or diving in both freshwater and saltwater. It has a pulse induction technology that will allow for finding objects at great depths. In fact, it can handle depths up to 200 feet which should be good enough for most people.

If you are planning to go for a swim, this metal detector will still work for you. The Ground Track comes with three settings that are used to overcome changes in the soil, Fast, Lock and Slow. The Garrett Infinium will also give good results in highly mineralized areas as well as on hot rock beds.

The Garrett Infinium has three controls which are Automatic Ground Track, Discrimination, and Threshold. It’s frequency and the audio threshold is of course adjustable. The Infinium is extremely sensitive and adjustable. You can choose the low-high tone for finding things like iron, copper, and silver while the high-low tone can be used for things like gold.

Unfortunately, the Infinium isn’t perfect. The discrimination isn’t as good as the price tag suggest. You might dig up one or two things that you do not care about.

The Garrett Infinium is the perfect metal detector if you are searching for metals both in and out of the water. You can easily find coins, jewelry, gold nuggets and other metals that you might find interesting. You can also choose to go with either land headphones of submersible headphones.

Garrett AT Gold

The Garrett AT Gold Metal Detector (model number 1140680) is made for finding gold. It has a 18KHz frequency that will detect smaller findings such as relics, coins, jewelry and gold nuggets. There’s also the option to use it under water down to 10 feet. However, if you wish to use it under water, you need to get waterproof headphones first which is sold separately. The AT Gold will work with any type of climate that you may encounter such as humid, wet or dusty.

There is a special digital target identification system on the device which will allow you to spot buried treasures more easily and precisely. You can also take advantage of the Tone Roll Audio feature which you can use to analyze targets much better. With it, you can listen better to different stages of audible sounds. All in all, Garrett has filled the AT Gold with a bunch of features that is something every gold hunter would want to have on a metal detector.

Something you should not do with your Garrett AT Gold Metal Detector is to use it in saltwater as the detector can’t handle that. If you are going to dip it in water, make sure it’s freshwater. Also, there is a lot of settings on the AT Gold and that is good if you know what the settings do. For a beginner, I think the Garrett AT Gold might be a bit too much to handle.

Garrett AT Pro

The Garrett AT Pro is the smaller version of AT Gold. It does not focus so heavily on gold as the AT Gold does and it’s a bit cheaper than the AT Gold. However, the AT Pro is a fantastic metal detector that is well worth the money on other fronts.

The AT Pro is waterproof down to 10 feet. There is support for both salt- and freshwater. But just as the AT Gold, the AT Pro’s stock headphones are not waterproofed and you will need to purchase waterproof headphones separately.

The Garret AT Pro has a Pro Audio Mode. This means that the device will put on multiple tones when it has found something. These tones are different depending on what you find and if you are able to master the Pro Mode, you will not dig up as much trash as you would with another metal detector for example. There is also a specific Iron Audio Mode that will give a special tone so that you know there’s iron under the ground.

Ground balance is another feature of the AT Pro. This feature will allow you to find targets at deeper depths and ignore signals from iron and salt from the ground. This will allow you to find targets deeper in the ground. You will also hear fewer tones in the headphones which are always welcome.

The AT Pro has a single frequency, 15KHz. While this is great for finding targets at any size, it will be annoying when you are looking for something specific and the metal detector keeps chattering when finding other items. On saltwater beaches, this might be a real problem since it will keep telling you that it finds something all the time, even with Ground Balance on.

Garrett Ace 400

Garretts Ace-Series are all in the affordable range and perfect for beginners. However, even in the Ace-Series, there is a lot of models to choose from. One of the best of them is the Ace 400. At an affordable price, it’s perfect for both beginners and serious metal detectorists. It’s Garretts middle-range product and has features from their top models while still being friendly to the user and the wallet as the lower end models.

The Ace 400 comes with a single frequency, 10KHz. However, it is possible to change the frequency a little bit. Don’t expect to go to 15KHz but a little change to the frequency will kill any interference with other metal detectors or signals, like WiFi, which is a good thing. Just as the AT Pro, the Ace 400 has the Iron Audio feature to help you differentiate iron from trash.

The Ace 400 has five different search modes which are going to help you find what you are looking for. The search modes are Zero Discrimination, Coins, Jewelry, Relics, and Custom. These settings will help beginners to start searching quickly. It is also possible to change the settings of the search modes so instead of finding coins, you can search for silver coins, for example.

The included headphones are not something to be excited about, they feel cheap. However, it’s the only way to change the volume on the metal detector as there is no way to do this on the device itself.

Garrett Ace 300

Going down the line of the Ace-Series, we find the Ace 300. As you can imagine, this device is a bit cheaper than the 400 but also come with fewer features.

Just as the Ace 400, the 300 comes with Digital Target ID. This is a feature that will help you identify targets under the ground. It has a scale of 0-99 which will indicate the conductivity of the target. The higher the number, the higher the conductivity. The Digital Target ID will make it easier for you to identify which type of metal it is and how big it is. It is a really handy feature.

The Ace 300 runs at the 8KHz frequency. Just as the Ace 400, it’s possible to change the frequency slightly to not interfere with other detectors. It’s a handy feature to have if you are not hunting alone. If you are alone, this won’t matter that much to you. The Ace 300 does also have the different search modes.

The Ace 300 has something called Enhanced Iron Resolution. It works the same as Iron Audio Mode on the more expensive models but not as good. The use case is the same, it will differentiate iron from trash. The search coil on the Ace 300 is 7x10” which is a bit smaller than the Ace 400.

Garrett Ace 200

The Garrett Ace 200 is very beginner-friendly and will not harm your wallet as much as the other metal detectors. However, it does not have all the functions that you can find in the middle- and higher-end models, but that is to be expected. However, if you really want to get a metal detector and don’t have a big budget, the Ace 200 will be a great choice.

It has three search modes instead of five which you can find on the more expensive models. Here, we can find modes for coins, jewelry, and custom. The Ace 200 does also have a Coin Depth Indicator that will help you determine the depth of the target.

Also on the Ace 200, you can find the Digital Target ID that will make it easier for you to identify what kind of metal it is. On a scale of 0-99, it will tell you the conductivity of the target and thus, it will be easier to know if there’s gold, silver, iron, copper or anything else. The coil is waterproof and the size of it is 6.5x9”. The device itself is not waterproof so do not submerge anything else than the coil as you will damage the metal detector if you do.
